Dtcwee has had another piece published on ABC Open:
A Chinese acquaintance was puzzled as to why he couldn’t just rock up at hospital and get an MRI. He offered to pay full price and was still knocked back. He could probably afford it too. Not just the procedure, the machine. As I tried to explain the referral system to him in basic (read: unintelligible) Mandarin, it dawned on me how alien it actually was.
My later experience hammered home the difference.
I have it on good authority that when you’re sick in China you can pretty much just take yourself along to the relevant hospital department. Got an ear ache? Toddle along to the ENT specialist. Toothache? Check out the dental clinic.
Why can’t we do that here? Dtcwee is on the case!
